The Music Rights Consultancy offers advice and support to online platforms, broadcasters and other media organisations seeking to negotiate rights deals with the music industry on a global basis. Our approach is simple: to ensure that your business gets the best deal.
The consultancy was founded by Aman Khullar, a City-trained lawyer with almost 20 years’ experience in legal and commercial work in the media industry. Aman worked for more than six years at a leading music rights collecting society, where he led the department that devised tariffs and negotiated blanket licences with a range of media businesses including major online platforms, broadcasters and distributors operating in the UK and internationally.
The Music Rights Consultancy is not a middle man or a go-between. We seek to add value by delivering clear, practical advice and helping our clients secure the right deal. We're not afraid to ask the music industry difficult questions or to challenge the status quo. Why? Because we've spent years sitting on the other side of the table – and now we're sitting on yours.
By leading negotiations or providing support, we work with clients to secure music rights from collecting societies, publishing associations and other collective bodies for the right fee. From the opening offer to finalising the draft licence, this includes securing blanket licences covering a range of activities such as on-demand streaming, broadcast, simulcast, secondary sales, and DVD/DTO exploitation.
Collecting societies are not mandated to license all rights, and some of the mandates they do have are non-exclusive. We can assess when direct deals with master rights holders and publishers are required or when they make financial sense, and secure those deals for you.
We have contacts across the globe and regularly conduct negotiations in territories as diverse and Taiwan, USA, Brazil, India, MENA , Europe and others. There are few territories we have not conducted business.
We work with TV, film and ad producers to secure master and publishing rights.
By reviewing how a service uses music – from digital database to playout, from the Cloud to mobile devices, from production to broadcast to secondary sale and more – we can advise if existing licences are fit for purpose, where new ones are required and what you should pay for them.
For producers and broadcasters commissioning original music, we can advise on the full cycle of rights creation and exploitation – from the correct legal and commercial terms for contracting writers and performers, through to appointing the best publishers to make your music earn you royalties.
Services that pay for their music rights on a share-of-revenue basis can be audited at any time, including several years after a deal expires. Findings can often be interpreted in favour of collecting societies and we have the experience to challenge audit reports and deliver a fair settlement, where required.
We deliver training on music rights with sessions tailored to your business's needs.
We act for global digital music services, various media industry associations, public service and commercial broadcasters, distributors, television producers and other businesses that use music. References are available on request.
